Updates on western pennsylvania rifle league and high school rifle championships

The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) recently concluded its 2026 rifle season, showcasing remarkable talent and intense competition among high school teams in Westmoreland County and beyond.

In the team championship, Hempfield Area clinched the title, narrowly surpassing Butler in a tiebreaker. Both teams achieved identical scores of 798, but Hempfield's 64 center shots edged out Butler's 57, securing their seventh WPIAL team championship and first since 2022. This victory places the Spartans among the elite, being one of only five teams with at least seven WPIAL team titles.

Hempfield's success was driven by a balanced performance. Chloe Snyder led with a 100-09x, while teammates Charlotte Auckerman, Caitlyn Andree, Izabell Orczeck, and Mackenzie Thomas each posted 100-08x. Abigail Hice added a 100-07x, and Taylor Miller contributed a 99-09x, demonstrating the team's depth and consistency.

Butler's strong showing was highlighted by Jackson Jungling's perfect 100-10x. Alyssa Miller (100-09x), Lucy Doutt (100-08x), Andrew Wolfe (100-07x), and Colton Beveridge (100-07x) kept the Golden Tornado competitive throughout the event.

Other notable team performances included West Greene in third place with a score of 796-56x, led by Savanna Somerville's 100-10x. Armstrong secured fourth place at 795-63x, with Riley Wasson achieving a 100-10x. Trinity rounded out the top five with a score of 795-61x.

In the individual championship, Butler's Jackson Jungling defended his title, becoming a back-to-back WPIAL individual champion. Jungling delivered a flawless performance, shooting a perfect 200 with 18 center shots, distinguishing himself among competitors who also achieved perfect scores. Trinity's Ryan Walther finished second with a 200 and 17 centers, while Hempfield's Chloe Snyder and Armstrong's Riley Wasson each posted 200 with 16 centers and seven inner tens, highlighting the exceptional skill level present in this year's competition.

The 2026 WPIAL rifle season underscored the dedication and prowess of high school athletes in Western Pennsylvania, setting a high standard for future competitions.
