Exploring airport solar panels and solar power installation for local airports |
Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity is exploring the installation of a solar power farm, potentially becoming the first airport of its size in Pennsylvania to adopt such an initiative.
Representatives from a solar energy company presented the proposal to the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, highlighting its potential to reduce energy costs and generate additional revenue.
The proposed project includes a solar array covering approximately 650 parking spaces at the airport, capable of producing 100% of the facility's power needs.
A scaled-down version would involve installing panels over 250 short-term parking spots and ground-mounted panels at Rostraver Airport, generating about 5.2 million kilowatt-hours of power.
The larger installation is projected to save the airport authority $1.7 million by decreasing reliance on purchased electricity.
Despite the potential benefits, authority members are considering the financial implications, including a 1% fee of the project's cost if they decide not to proceed after signing a letter of intent.
They plan to deliberate further before making a decision at the upcoming board meeting.
In related developments, the Westmoreland County Housing Authority is planning two solar power projects to serve Hempfield Towers and a warehouse, aiming to save millions in energy costs over the next 25 years.
Additionally, Pittsburgh International Airport is expanding its solar field by adding over 11,000 panels atop a closed landfill, enhancing the regional power grid's renewable energy supply.
These initiatives reflect a growing trend in the region toward adopting solar energy solutions to reduce costs and promote sustainability. |
