Senior Housing Project Moves Forward in Mt. Pleasant Township |
Church View Senior Residences Breaks Ground, Honoring Late State Rep. Mike Reese |
Construction has commenced on the Church View Senior Residences in Mt. Pleasant Township, marking a significant advancement in local senior housing initiatives.
The project, valued at approximately $5.6 million, will feature 20 units designed to accommodate seniors aged 62 and older.
Located adjacent to St. Florian Parish, the development is situated on a two-acre parcel generously donated by the Diocese of Greensburg.
This endeavor was notably championed by the late state Representative Mike Reese, who played a pivotal role in site selection and planning before his untimely passing in 2021.
His family, along with Westmoreland County officials, gathered at the recent groundbreaking ceremony to honor his contributions.
“It will be so exciting to see it built,” expressed Reese’s widow, Angela Reese.
County Commissioner Ted Kopas acknowledged Reese's instrumental efforts, stating, “While Mike may have made this project possible, this is only part of his legacy.”
The Reese family resides nearby and are active members of St. Florian Parish.
Angela Reese recalled that when parishioners sought to develop senior housing in 2018-2019, they turned to her husband for support.
“He was all in,” she said. “Mt. Pleasant is where he grew up… Mt. Pleasant was his heart. He loved this community more than anything.”
The Westmoreland County Housing Authority is overseeing the project, with Executive Director Michael Washowich confirming that the development is fully funded.
The funding structure includes a $1.25 million grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh's Affordable Housing Program, awarded in December 2025.
Additionally, the county has allocated a $2 million zero-percent interest loan through its HOME Investment Partnerships Program and Act 137 Housing Trust Fund.
“We’ve now invested $4.3 million in affordable senior housing here in Westmoreland County,” noted County Commissioner Doug Chew.
He emphasized the county's commitment to building senior housing in familiar communities, allowing residents to remain close to their neighbors and surroundings.
The Church View Senior Residences are expected to be completed by fall 2026, at which point applications will be accepted.
Reflecting on the project's significance, Angela Reese remarked, “It was just, again, something that was special to Mike’s heart because it was his church, it was his community. It was for people who were in his life.”
She anticipates that many future residents will be familiar faces from the community.
