North Huntingdon Secures State Grant for Indian Lake Rehabilitation |
Major Restoration Project Aims to Revitalize Beloved Community Landmark |
North Huntingdon Township has been awarded a substantial grant to support the comprehensive rehabilitation of Indian Lake Park.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has allocated $665,200 through its Community Conservation Partnerships Program to assist in this endeavor.
This funding contributes to the estimated $1.2 million required for the project, which encompasses dredging the lake, repairing the pedestrian bridge and Kenda Dam, and stabilizing streambanks.
The grant is one of four applications submitted to support this significant improvement initiative.
Over the years, Indian Lake has experienced considerable silt accumulation, leading to reduced water quality and diminished fish habitats.
The planned dredging aims to remove approximately 10,000 cubic yards of sediment, thereby restoring the lake's depth and ecological balance.
Additionally, the project will address the erosion of the Kenda Dam streambank, which has been compromised due to suboptimal construction methods involving mine spoilage as fill material.
Stabilizing the streambank is crucial to prevent further environmental degradation.
The iconic covered bridge spanning the lake's spillway is also slated for essential repairs, including the replacement of support beams and flooring, ensuring its safety and longevity for future generations.
Township officials are actively pursuing additional funding sources to fully finance the project and minimize the financial impact on local taxpayers.
Construction is anticipated to commence during the 2027 or 2028 construction seasons, with efforts made to minimize disruptions to park visitors and local wildlife.
The restoration of Indian Lake Park underscores North Huntingdon's commitment to preserving and enhancing its cherished community spaces.
Residents can look forward to a revitalized park that continues to serve as a hub for recreation and natural beauty. |
