Intervala Charges Up Westmoreland Economy with $6M Expansion

High-tech manufacturer transforms former Sony plant into a modern production hub, creating 45 new jobs in East Huntingdon

EAST HUNTINGDON, PA — The historic industrial site that once defined television production in Westmoreland County is humming with new life. Intervala, a leading electronics manufacturer, has announced the completion of a $6 million privately funded expansion at the RIDC Westmoreland Innovation Center.

The project, which marks a significant milestone for the company since its move to the facility in 2021, has transformed 60,000 square feet of previously underutilized space into a high-capacity manufacturing floor. By implementing advanced automated storage and retrieval systems, the company also reclaimed an additional 40,000 square feet, bringing its total footprint in the multi-use complex to 200,000 square feet.

“This expansion reflects the work we do and our commitment to the facility where we’re going to be for a while,” said Rob McKernan, CEO of Intervala.

Intervala specializes in the production of complex printed circuit board assemblies, electromechanical systems, and cable equipment. Their technology supports critical industries including medical devices, Department of Defense contracting, and the rapidly growing sector of artificial intelligence data centers.

Job Growth and Community Impact With the physical expansion complete, Intervala is now focused on scaling its workforce. The company currently employs 300 people and is looking to add 45 new members to its team. To fill these roles, the company is hosting open interviews this Saturday at the plant.

The site, which was famously home to Volkswagen and later Sony, continues its evolution as a regional tech anchor. Beyond Intervala’s growth, the industrial park is also set to host a $30 million, 100-acre autonomous vehicle test track, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

“Intervala's expansion and investment shows real confidence in Westmoreland County,” said local official Sean Kertes. “Companies don’t expand unless the workforce and business climate supports it.”

For many in the region, the expansion signals a successful transition from the era of traditional mass manufacturing to a new chapter of specialized, high-tech engineering.
