Dayton Freight to Build New Facility and Create 50 New Jobs in Westmoreland County

Expansion at I-70 Industrial Park to Enhance Regional Logistics and Employment

Dayton Freight has finalized the acquisition of 31.5 acres within the I-70 Industrial Park in South Huntingdon Township, marking a significant expansion in Westmoreland County.

 

The company plans to construct a 36,000-square-foot shipping cross-dock facility, which is expected to create 50 new jobs, including positions for drivers, forklift operators, office staff, and leadership roles.

 

Based in Dayton, Ohio, Dayton Freight is a private, less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carrier with over 6,000 employees across 73 locations in 15 states.

 

This new facility will be the company's third in Pennsylvania, complementing existing operations in McKees Rocks and Bedford.

 

According to recent reports, the planned facility will feature a 30,000-square-foot cross-dock and 6,000 square feet of office space.

 

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and be completed in early 2027.

 

The strategic location of the I-70 Industrial Park—less than a mile from I-70's Smithton interchange and just eight miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike in New Stanton—makes it especially well-suited for shipping and logistics operations.

 

This positioning enables Dayton Freight to enhance direct service to major markets across Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and beyond.

 

In the less-than-truckload shipping industry, efficiency hinges on regional hubs where freight from multiple customers can be consolidated and redirected quickly.

 

That's why access to a major interstate like I-70 is so valuable.

 

The park already supports high-volume operations for companies like Dick's Sporting Goods and Levin Furniture, and Dayton Freight seems well-suited to thrive in that location.

 

With only one available parcel—an 11.2-acre lot—remaining at I-70 Industrial Park, nearby Commerce Crossing at Westmoreland offers an ideal build-ready option along the interstate corridor.

 

With I-70 Industrial Park nearly sold out, the two large, pad-ready lots at Commerce Crossing represent an excellent opportunity for companies ready to build.

 

That park has an immediate connection to I-70, and it's only four miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike in New Stanton.

 

That combination of on-corridor siting and shovel-readiness is what project teams are prioritizing.

 

I-70 Industrial Park currently is home to eight companies, including Levin Furniture, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Wyatt Inc.

 

It has more than 1 million square feet of building space on nearly 200 developed acres.

 

Approximately 850 people work in the park.

 

Dayton Freight's expansion is part of a broader trend of economic growth in Westmoreland County.

 

In recent developments, Hitachi Energy announced a $70 million investment to expand its operations in the county, creating over 100 new jobs.

 

Additionally, Premier Automation is investing $13.6 million to expand its manufacturing operations in Murrysville, aiming to create 111 new jobs and retain at least 130 existing positions over the next five years.

 

These investments underscore the county's commitment to fostering economic development and job creation.
