From Saint Vincent College to Award-Winning Juvenile Probation Officer |
Taylor Collins, a 2022 graduate of Saint Vincent College, has swiftly made her mark in the Allegheny County Juvenile Probation Department.
In October 2025, she was honored with the department's Rookie of the Year award, recognizing her exceptional dedication and service.
Collins, a Pittsburgh native and alumna of Fox Chapel Area High School, initially explored various colleges before choosing Saint Vincent.
She recalls, "It felt like my second home," emphasizing the campus's welcoming atmosphere and its Catholic identity, which resonated deeply with her faith.
Beginning her college journey without a clear career path, Collins discovered her passion during an Introduction to Criminology course.
Inspired by the material, she declared a major in criminology, law, and society by her sophomore year.
Under the mentorship of professors like Dr. Bruce Antkowiak and Dr. Eric Kocian, she gained a solid foundation in the field.
Collins credits Dr. Kocian for teaching her to trust in her faith and strive for excellence.
After graduating in May 2022, Collins explored various roles before joining the Allegheny County Juvenile Probation Department in October 2024.
In her role, she assesses new cases, determines appropriate interventions, and collaborates with supervisors to decide on formal or informal proceedings.
Reflecting on her journey, Collins states, "Now that I have been in the role for over a year, I know I have found my calling."
Her dedication was recognized with the Rookie of the Year award, presented by Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Russell Carlino.
Collins expresses gratitude for her education and the support of her family and mentors, acknowledging their role in her success.
Currently pursuing a master's degree in juvenile justice system administration at Shippensburg University, Collins aims to graduate in May 2027.
She aspires to advance within the Probation Department, with goals of becoming a supervisor and, eventually, an assistant chief.
Professors Antkowiak and Kocian commend Collins's achievements.
Antkowiak notes her commitment to justice, stating, "She epitomizes what we hope all our graduates believe: that justice is up to them."
Kocian highlights her growth into a "courageous, competent, and caring professional."
Collins also acknowledges the unwavering support of her family, particularly her mother, who provided strength and encouragement throughout her journey.
As Pittsburgh continues to evolve, with developments like the upcoming Arts Landing park and the Esplanade project on the North Shore, Collins's story serves as an inspiration.
Her dedication to serving the community reflects the city's spirit of resilience and growth. |
