Happy Halloween season, Westmoreland! We've gathered five local guides to help you choose your kind of October fun: daytime treats, haunted park trails, handmade scarecrows, fall flavors and a comfortable family safety plan.

Keep this special edition handy through Halloween, choose the outings that fit your household and check the organizer links before heading out. Let's enjoy the creativity and community close to home.

Old Salem Market offers a daytime Halloween stop on Sunday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Westmoreland Cultural Trust lists trick-or-treating at the Greensburg Garden & Civic Center, 951 Old Salem Road, as a free event. Children are invited to wear costumes, and select vendors will distribute treats alongside the market's regular shopping activity.

The announcement also highlights young entrepreneurs, making the outing a chance to see local creativity as well as collect candy. Pick a comfortable arrival time, bring a manageable treat bag and let vendors indicate whether they are participating. A small shopping budget can help children enjoy browsing without turning each table into another spending decision. Families do not need to stay for the entire event window to enjoy the celebration.

Our guide explains how to plan a relaxed visit and keep this market outing separate from municipal trick-or-treat schedules. The October 18 event does not set neighborhood hours for Greensburg or the rest of Westmoreland County. Check the organizer's current page before leaving and ask about parking, accessibility or weather arrangements if those details affect your group. A short daytime costume visit can be plenty of Halloween fun. Save the organizer's current page for a final check before leaving.

Westmoreland County's free Hobgoblin Hikes return on two Saturdays: Cedar Creek Park on October 17 and Twin Lakes Park on October 24, both from 7 to 9 p.m. The guided outdoor route is about half a mile. The county recommends the events for ages eight and older and encourages parents to accompany children.

Expect theatrical haunted scenes and costumed characters rather than a candy route. No treats are distributed, although costumes are welcome. These are outdoor events held in rain, with cancellation reserved for dangerous or severe weather. Check the county's current notice before leaving and ask about route or access needs if walking conditions affect your group. A free event can still be too intense for a child who dislikes darkness or surprises.

Our guide helps families choose an evening, prepare for a walk and decide whether the scare level fits. The county also lists volunteer opportunities; anyone interested should check official registration and requirements. The published Twin Lakes volunteer meeting is October 20 at 6:30 p.m., subject to confirmation with the organizer. Save the county's event page, coordinate transportation and leave enough time for an unhurried visit. Pick the outing for the people attending, not simply because admission is free. Save the organizer's current page for a final check before leaving.

Ligonier's Scarecrow Contest runs October 16 through November 5, 2026, according to the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce. The listing identifies Diamond Park, 120 East Main Street, and invites visitors to discover handmade creations around town and vote for a favorite. Check current chamber instructions for voting and the location of entries.

This is a chance for a gentle seasonal stroll rather than a timed haunted show. The published date range does not guarantee staffed programming throughout the day or evening. Give your walk a playful purpose: choose the funniest expression, most inventive material or a private family favorite. These informal choices are separate from the official contest. Look closely, take a photograph respectfully and leave each creation in place for others to enjoy.

Our guide offers ways to make a short visit feel complete, from bringing a sketchbook to choosing an easy meeting point. A longer visit can include another activity only after checking its separate details. The chamber's October 24 Pumpkin & Spice Festival, for example, is ticketed; it is not automatically part of viewing scarecrows. Save the official listing, confirm practical arrangements and enjoy the community's creativity at a comfortable pace. Save the organizer's current page for a final check before leaving.

Ligonier's Pumpkin & Spice Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce describes seasonal food and drink sampling, activities and friendly contests. Its calendar also highlights a Hey Pumpkin contest on the bandstand. The event listing identifies the chamber at 120 East Main Street in Ligonier.

This is a ticketed outing. Check the registration page for current price, availability, inclusions and any age-related conditions before buying. The public description does not establish that every activity or optional purchase is included. Ask the chamber about details essential to your group's plans and check ingredients directly with food providers when dietary needs or allergies affect your choices.

Our guide helps you shape a relaxed afternoon around a few priorities, a clear spending limit and enough time to enjoy the experience. Ligonier's Scarecrow Contest takes place during the same period, but it is a separate activity with its own information. You do not need to add another attraction to make the day worthwhile. Save the ticket confirmation, choose a meeting point and check organizer updates close to October 24. Fall flavors and time together can be the whole plan. Save the organizer's current page for a final check before leaving.

Photo by Charles Parker on Pexels — Illustrative trick-or-treat scene; plan adult supervision and safe routes.

A comfortable Westmoreland Halloween begins with your municipality's own announcement. Do not assume a market event or neighboring town's schedule establishes the hours for your street. Keep each outing separate on the calendar. Agree on the walking group, the supervising adult, a compact route and the finishing time before children head out. Save a recognizable meeting point and a pickup plan.

Try costumes with the shoes and outer layers children will actually wear. Safe Kids Worldwide recommends reflective details, lights, properly fitting outfits and adult accompaniment for children younger than 12. Drivers should slow down and watch carefully for pedestrians, following National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidance. Keep phones away during crossings and allow time for a calm trip home.

At home, give collected treats an adult review. The Food and Drug Administration recommends a snack or meal before trick-or-treating, checking wrappers and allergy labels afterward, and removing items unsuitable for younger children. Our guide brings these steps into a practical family plan, along with suggestions for comfortable pickups and welcoming visitors at your door. Let tired children finish early and keep the focus on a pleasant evening together. Official safety resources and the local announcement are linked for easy reference. Save the organizer links for a final check.
