Flag Day is coming up.

Core Symbolism

National Unity: Unlike Independence Day, which celebrates freedom from British rule, Flag Day explicitly celebrates the birth of the primary symbol that binds the states together.

The Stripes: The 13 horizontal stripes symbolize the original colonies that declared independence.

The Stars: The 50 stars represent the collective strength of the 50 individual sovereign states.

The Colors: According to military tradition, red represents valor and bravery; white represents purity and innocence; blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Pennsylvania is the only state that observes it as an official state holiday.

🌟 Local Shoutouts

Our Future Leaders: Westmoreland County Scholar-Athlete Honorees!

We have some serious bragging rights this week for our local high school seniors! The annual Westmoreland County Scholar-Athlete Excellence Award banquet is taking place this Tuesday at Ferrante's Lakeview. Athletic directors across 18 county high schools nominated 12 standout finalists who represent the absolute best in local sportsmanship, dedication, and academic brilliance. Leading the pack are incredible student-athletes like Belle Vernon’s wrestling phenom Elijah Brown (a Penn State commit with a 4.2 GPA) and tennis star Gabby Dusi (a Duquesne commit ranking 6th in her class). We are so incredibly proud of these hard-working kids who prove you can rule the field and the classroom!

🎖️ Local Heroes

Standing Tall: Pfc. Roland Lee Bowser Honored in Lower Burrell

A long-overdue, deeply moving moment of recognition took place as our community gathered to honor a true hero. During a special Memorial Day service outside the Lower Burrell American Legion, the family of Pfc. Roland Lee Bowser came together to share his story. Bowser, a New Kensington native, tragically passed away in captivity during the Korean War back in 1951, and his remains were only recently identified and brought home. His sister, Marjie Mahar, traveled back to the area to read a deeply personal letter to her older brother, reminding us all of the profound sacrifices made by local families to protect our freedoms.
