Westmoreland families can put the costumes to use before Halloween night at Old Salem Market in Greensburg. Its October 18 trick-or-treat event combines a daytime market visit with seasonal fun, giving children a chance to dress up while adults browse. It is a useful choice for households that prefer a shorter outing and an earlier finish.

The Westmoreland Cultural Trust lists the event for Sunday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greensburg Garden & Civic Center, 951 Old Salem Road. The Trust's listing identifies it as free and says select vendors will offer trick-or-treating.

The announcement also highlights young entrepreneurs alongside the market's regular vendors. That adds another reason to slow down and look around: children can see other young people presenting what they have made. The visit can be a candy stop, but it can also become a conversation about creativity and trying a small business idea.

Choose a comfortable arrival plan

Decide whether your family is coming mainly for treats, shopping or a little of both. A shared expectation helps when one person wants to linger at every table and another is ready to move on. Pick a meeting point and give children a clear idea of how long you expect to stay.

Bring a manageable treat bag and keep costume accessories simple. A short daytime event is a chance to test whether an outfit is comfortable before a longer neighborhood walk. If a cape catches on everything or shoes become uncomfortable quickly, you will have time to adjust the costume for the next outing.

A market is a shared space

Let each vendor indicate whether they are participating in trick-or-treating rather than expecting candy from every table. Give shoppers room to browse and encourage children to wait their turn. A friendly greeting is part of the experience, especially when young vendors are practicing their own customer conversations.

Set a small shopping budget if children will be choosing a purchase. Explaining the limit beforehand can turn browsing into a manageable choice rather than a string of negotiations. It also keeps the free event from becoming an unexpectedly expensive afternoon.

There is no need to stay for the entire window. A few favorite stops can be enough for a younger child. Plan an easy finishing point, whether that is a costume photo or choosing one memorable creation to talk about on the way home.

Keep Halloween dates straight

This market event does not establish neighborhood trick-or-treat hours for Greensburg or any other municipality. Check the official notice for the place where you plan to walk on Halloween. Westmoreland County contains many communities, and one event's time should never be treated as a countywide schedule.

Before leaving, review the Cultural Trust's current listing for updates and ask the organizer about any practical detail the announcement does not answer. Parking, access needs and weather arrangements are worth confirming when they affect your group's ability to attend comfortably.

Make one simple plan and enjoy it. A daytime market, familiar Halloween costumes and a chance to support local vendors can provide a satisfying seasonal outing without a haunted attraction or a long evening route. Save the organizer's page so the whole family is working from the same information.

Before adding an activity to a shared calendar, send everyone the same organizer link. That helps relatives compare the same information and makes a later change easier to communicate. Decide who will check for updates on the day, then keep the rest of the plan flexible enough to fit the people actually coming along.

The 10 to 2 window at Old Salem Market works well for younger kids. We can be home before they get tired.
