Southwestern Pennsylvania is set to undergo a major infrastructure transformation under a newly approved $4.7 billion transportation plan spanning the next five years. The initiative outlines a wide range of upgrades to highways, bridges, and public transit systems across a 10-county region, aiming to improve safety, reduce congestion, and modernize aging infrastructure.

Developed by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, the plan allocates approximately $2 billion toward road and bridge improvements, while $2.7 billion is designated for public transportation enhancements. Key projects include the long-anticipated modernization of Route 30 in Westmoreland County and the development of a rapid bus transit line connecting Oakland to Downtown Pittsburgh.

Roadway improvements will address critical corridors such as Campbells Run Road, P.J. McCardle Roadway, and Route 201. Safety-focused upgrades are also planned at several high-traffic intersections and corridors throughout the region. On Route 30, proposed changes include installing median barriers and jughandle turnarounds to reduce collision risks.

Public transit investments will fund new buses, station upgrades, and ongoing maintenance. Regional agencies are expected to receive hundreds of new vehicles, replacing aging fleets and expanding service options. Long-term transit goals include extending busways to Pittsburgh International Airport and surrounding suburbs.

Bridge improvements remain another priority, with $238 million dedicated to repairing or replacing key structures. Several major bridges, including the Homestead Grays Bridge and the Layton Bridge in Fayette County, are scheduled for upgrades or full replacement.

While local officials have praised the scope of the plan, they emphasize that funding limitations continue to restrict how many projects can move forward. Even so, the initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening the region’s transportation network and supporting future growth.
