An anonymous donor has stepped forward with a $100,000 contribution to preserve Wesley Family Services’ “Open Your Heart to a Senior” program in Westmoreland County, which had been at risk of shutting down due to a loss of federal funding.

Doug Muetzel, CEO of Wesley Family Services, described the donation as both unexpected and deeply moving. He said the organization was surprised and humbled by the generosity shown at such a critical moment.

For seniors who rely on the program, the impact is immediate and profound. Diana Holcomb, a participant, said the donation has lifted a heavy burden of uncertainty.

She had feared the program’s closure would leave her without access to basic necessities like food and support. Facing that possibility, Holcomb reached out to local media to share her situation, hoping to bring attention to the issue.

Her story aired on Pittsburgh’s Action News 4, helping highlight the broader need within the community. Shortly after the coverage, the anonymous donor came forward with the lifesaving contribution.

Holcomb said the news brought her to tears and renewed her faith that people care. She expressed deep gratitude, saying she would thank the donor with a hug and heartfelt blessings if given the chance.

The funding will sustain the Westmoreland County program for approximately one year. However, challenges remain. A similar initiative, the “In Service of Seniors” program in Allegheny County, is still expected to end soon without additional financial support.

Muetzel emphasized the importance of community awareness and collaboration in addressing these needs. The anonymous donor has also expressed hope that their gift will inspire others to step up and support vulnerable seniors.
