Westmoreland County has a bright reason to plan a museum visit this week: glass art is taking center stage in Greensburg, with a free community day closing the celebration on Sunday.

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art and Pittsburgh Glass Center are presenting Reflections in Glass from October 14 through 18, 2026, pairing creative work with opportunities to see how artists make it.

This is a chance to look at familiar galleries differently, whether you already enjoy museum visits or have been waiting for an inviting reason to try one.

Art in conversation

The partnership features original glass creations by 15 artists, each responding to an artwork displayed in the museum.

Rather than treating glass as decoration, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how material, color and light can change an artistic idea.

You do not need specialist knowledge to join that conversation: start with what catches your attention, then look for a connection between the glass piece and its inspiration.

For a family outing, try asking everyone to choose a favorite before sharing their reasons; different answers can make the same room feel newly interesting.

The celebration also includes Contemporary Glass from the Salatka Collection, a temporary exhibition drawn from the collection of Dr. Karl Salatka.

It offers another way to explore the variety of studio glass during the same five-day visit window.

Choose your day

Daytime celebration hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, at 221 North Main Street in Greensburg.

From October 14 through 17, listed admission is $10 for nonmember adults, $5 for children ages 4–17, and free for children 3 and younger.

Museum and Pittsburgh Glass Center members receive free admission during those days, and advance registration is recommended.

The separate Glass After Dark program runs Friday, October 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with music, artist encounters and demonstrations from Pittsburgh Glass Center's Light Lab.

Friday evening admission is listed at $5 for members and $15 for nonmembers, with an online credit-card service fee noted by the organizer.

Check that event's ticket page before booking rather than assuming daytime admission covers the evening program.

Sunday welcomes everyone

On October 18, admission is free for all, making the final day a particularly useful option for neighbors planning a lower-cost outing.

The Sunday schedule lists outdoor glassblowing demonstrations from the Hot Wheels Mobile Studio from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.

Free mini mosaic making runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with supplies available while they last.

Visitors can also vote for the People's Choice Award until 3 p.m.; the winner is scheduled to be announced at 4 p.m.

Those different activities make it worth checking the detailed schedule before deciding when to arrive, especially if a demonstration or hands-on project is your family's priority.

Plan a comfortable visit

Some separately ticketed workshops are already marked sold out, so a general visit should not be mistaken for a reserved workshop seat.

Allow time to move between the galleries and activities, and check the museum's registration page for the latest availability.

For grandparents, parents and children visiting together, choosing one shared activity can keep the day manageable without trying to do everything.

The local appeal is straightforward: a regional partnership is bringing creative work and practical access together in a place residents can reach close to home.

Pick the date that fits your household, confirm the details with the museum, and let curiosity lead the visit.
