Westmoreland high school students got a hands-on introduction to healthcare at Seton Hill University on October 21. The Future Masters of Medicine session featured emergency physician Dr. Heather Walker, who discussed emergency care and guided students through suturing practice on artificial skin. The experience introduced a professional skill in a supervised educational setting.
Local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gregory Bisignani leads the series, now in its third year. It offers about six sessions annually to county juniors and seniors invited by teachers or guidance counselors. Seton Hill and Saint Vincent College are partnering as hosts this year. Interested students should ask their school about participation; this report does not announce a new session or an open public registration.
The story also explores ongoing educational resources at Seton Hill's health and sciences college, including interprofessional learning, laboratories, research and internships. The Boyle Health Sciences Center provides clinical and research spaces, while nursing students use dedicated skills and simulation facilities. For families considering healthcare education, the next step is practical: compare programs, discuss requirements and costs, and ask what each career's everyday work actually involves. A counselor can help students choose an appropriate first step without requiring them to settle on a profession immediately. |
Landscape photography offers a fresh reason to visit Greensburg. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art pairs Ansel Adams: Majestic Lands with Victoria Sambunaris: Altered Lands through May 2, 2027. More than 40 Adams works share the conversation with Sambunaris's views of landscapes shaped by roads, railways, mines and other infrastructure.
One ticket covers both exhibitions: $10 for nonmember adults, $5 for children ages 4–17, and free for children 3 and younger. Museum members and EBT cardholders enter the exhibitions free; active-duty U.S. military members pay $5. Individual visitors do not need advance registration, while groups of 10 or more should arrange their visit. Other museum areas remain free, so the exhibition ticket is separate from general admission.
The museum is at 221 North Main Street, with free on-site parking. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays; check current hours before visiting. For November 3–9, plan around Wednesday through Sunday. Make it a family conversation by choosing a photograph, sharing what first caught your eye and looking again for an overlooked detail. The article's credited stock photos are illustrative landscapes, not works from either exhibition. Before heading out, confirm admission details and discuss access needs with museum staff so the visit suits your group. |
Compass Inn Museum's Bonfire Celebration returns to Laughlintown on Saturday, November 7, from 3:30–9 p.m. The official event schedule begins with museum tours, crafts and activities, followed by bonfire lighting at 5:30 p.m. and evening entertainment. The celebration draws on the British Guy Fawkes Night tradition and includes historical interpretation, traditional fare to sample and a Waterford VFD food truck with meals for purchase.
Admission is $30 for nonmembers, $20 for members, $8 for ages 6–17, and free for children 5 and younger. Food truck purchases cost extra. The historic inn's story begins in 1799, giving the seasonal celebration a connection to the travelers and stagecoaches that once passed through this part of Westmoreland County.
Plan for an outdoor November evening and review the museum's accessibility information before visiting. The grounds include uneven paths and grass, some buildings have steps, and ramps for the inn's first floor require advance arrangements. Contact the museum about your group's needs, then use the event page for tickets, directions and any updates. Arriving early offers families time for the afternoon activities before the bonfire is lit. Check the listing again before leaving, and confirm any visitor arrangements with staff so your group knows what to expect. |
