WVU Health Expands Regional Reach with Independence Health Acquisition

Deal aims to strengthen local care access while investing heavily in Western Pennsylvania hospitals

West Virginia University Health System has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Independence Health System, a move that significantly broadens its presence across Western Pennsylvania. The acquisition will extend WVU Health’s footprint into Westmoreland, Butler, and Clarion counties, adding five hospitals, outpatient facilities, and approximately 1,000 providers to its network.

Leaders from both organizations emphasize that the deal is designed to stabilize and strengthen local healthcare services. Independence Health CEO Ken DeFurio said the partnership will provide the financial resources and clinical support needed to ensure long-term sustainability while preserving community-based care. WVU Health CEO Albert L. Wright Jr. echoed that message, noting the goal is to expand access to high-quality treatment close to home.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval, including review by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and potentially the Attorney General’s Office. Approval is expected in early fall.

As part of the agreement, WVU Health has committed to investing $800 million over five years to upgrade facilities, enhance technology, and improve patient services. Planned projects include major outpatient renovations, a new patient tower, an upgraded emergency department, and a systemwide electronic health records overhaul.

The acquisition also reflects a broader trend of consolidation among regional health systems, as smaller providers seek partnerships to remain financially viable and expand services. Independence Health reported an operating loss in 2025, while WVU Health posted strong financial performance, positioning it to support the integration.

Importantly, officials say patient care roles will be preserved, with employees integrated into WVU Health’s larger system. The deal will also support expansion of WVU’s insurance arm, Peak Health, aligning with integrated care models used by larger competitors in the region.
