Westmoreland County Embraces Digital Transformation Across Sectors

Westmoreland County is experiencing a significant shift towards digital innovation, with substantial investments in electronic technologies reshaping its economic and educational landscapes.

Powerex Inc., a leading semiconductor solutions provider, is at the forefront of this transformation. The company is investing over $14 million to modernize its Youngwood facility, aiming to double its module assembly capacity. This expansion is expected to create at least 25 new manufacturing jobs and retain 215 existing positions, bolstering the local economy.

In the realm of public safety, the Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office is establishing a state-of-the-art digital forensic laboratory. Funded by a $500,000 grant, this facility will expedite the analysis of digital evidence, enhancing the efficiency of criminal investigations and potentially saving the county over $50,000 annually.

Education is also embracing the digital wave. Westmoreland County Public Schools are launching a comprehensive Digital Literacy program for the 2024-2025 academic year. This initiative aims to equip students across all grade levels with essential digital skills, preparing them for success in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Furthermore, the county is partnering with Verizon to expand broadband services to underserved areas, including parts of Derry, Fairfield, and Ligonier Townships.
