Westmoreland County Launches Bold Push to Grow Workforce

New campaign highlights jobs, affordability, and quality of life to attract residents

Westmoreland County leaders are stepping up efforts to attract new residents in 2026 through a revitalized campaign aimed at strengthening the local workforce and community. The initiative, led by Go Laurel Highlands and titled “You Belong in Westmoreland,” promotes the region as an ideal place to live, work, and build a future.

Officials say the campaign comes at a critical time. In recent years, the county has experienced significant economic growth, particularly in manufacturing, which has now become one of the region’s leading industries. Companies—ranging from global firms to emerging startups—are expanding operations, but many are struggling to fill open positions.

At the same time, population decline remains a challenge. Census data shows the county has lost thousands of residents over the past decade, creating a gap between available jobs and the local workforce. Leaders point to an aging population and a higher death rate as key factors contributing to the decline.

To address this imbalance, the campaign highlights Westmoreland County’s advantages, including lower taxes compared to neighboring Allegheny County, access to outdoor recreation, and a growing inventory of affordable housing. Local efforts are already underway to improve housing options, with redevelopment projects transforming previously blighted areas into new homes for prospective buyers.

County officials also emphasize the appeal of revitalized downtowns in communities such as Greensburg, Latrobe, and Monessen, where affordable and livable housing is becoming more accessible.

Ultimately, the goal is not just to increase population numbers, but to attract skilled and motivated individuals who can contribute to the region’s long-term growth. Leaders remain optimistic that with the right messaging and opportunities, Westmoreland County can reverse its population trends and build a stronger, more vibrant future.
