Controversy over school calendar 2026 2027 updates for Westmoreland County PA |
Greater Latrobe area school district and Westmoreland Fair event details |
The Greater Latrobe Area School District has unveiled its calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year, with classes commencing on August 24, 2026.
This start date coincides with the Westmoreland Fair, scheduled from August 21 to August 29, 2026.
Superintendent Dr. Kim Rieffannacht addressed the overlap, stating, "We support and appreciate our students involved in agriculture and fair activities. Students needing to be excused to fully participate in these important community education opportunities can contact their building principals to secure excused absences."
Despite this provision, some parents remain concerned about the potential impact on students' participation in the fair.
One parent expressed frustration, noting that during the board meeting, "They asked for a discussion and asked for comments. We presented our arguments on our side, and not one comment was made. Not one piece of discussion, and it was approved unanimously."
Another parent highlighted the significance of the fair for students involved in 4-H programs, emphasizing that the fair is the culmination of a year-long commitment.
They stated, "The big reward at the end of it is to be able to go to the fair and have that enjoyable time and really focus on that and not have to worry about missing school or going to school during the day and then coming to the fair in the evening."
They further explained, "The 4-H process is not just the fair; it's an entire year-round process. My son started his 4-H meetings a month ago; he has his projects. He has pigs that he is showing there and is considering showing some other projects. So this is stuff that they work on all year long."
The concern extends beyond the Greater Latrobe School District, as other schools in the county are also starting earlier, potentially affecting student participation in the fair.
They remarked, "The separation is getting wider and wider. By the school not supporting this type of environment, it continues to separate, and it's a shame."
The Westmoreland Fair has traditionally begun on the third Friday in August, a schedule that remains unchanged for 2026.
While the school board has approved the calendar, parents are hopeful for a reconsideration to better accommodate students' involvement in the fair. |
