PennSTART: Pioneering Autonomous Vehicle Testing in Westmoreland County |
New Facility to Propel Innovation and Economic Growth in the Region |
Westmoreland County is set to become a hub for autonomous vehicle testing with the upcoming launch of PennSTART, a state-of-the-art research facility designed to advance self-driving technology and first responder training.
Construction is underway on the $30 million project, featuring a two-mile test track capable of accommodating autonomous vehicles at highway speeds. The facility will also include off-road areas to simulate diverse driving conditions, providing a comprehensive environment for testing and development.
Located at the Regional Industrial Development Corporation’s (RIDC) Westmoreland Innovation Center in Mount Pleasant, PennSTART aims to attract leading companies in the autonomous vehicle sector. Aurora and Stack are among the early adopters expected to utilize the track, bringing valuable testing and maintenance jobs to the region.
According to Don Smith, president of RIDC, the facility will enable companies to conduct approximately 80% of their deployment testing on-site, enhancing efficiency and fostering local economic growth.
Beyond vehicle testing, PennSTART will serve as a critical training ground for first responders. The controlled environment will allow for realistic simulations of traffic incidents, including scenarios involving autonomous and electric vehicles, ensuring that emergency personnel are well-prepared for the evolving transportation landscape.
With features designed to replicate various terrains and weather conditions, PennSTART stands out among similar facilities like SunTrax in Florida and Mcity in Michigan. This versatility ensures that testing can be conducted year-round, regardless of environmental factors.
As autonomous vehicle technology continues to advance, PennSTART positions Westmoreland County at the forefront of innovation, promising significant contributions to the industry and the local economy. |
