North Huntingdon Township Municipal Authority has adopted an $11.4 million budget for the 2027 fiscal year, ensuring there will be no increase in sewage rates for its 12,750 residential and commercial customers.
The new budget, effective May 1, was announced by General Manager Mike Branthoover.
The board also approved an $8.8 million five-year capital improvement plan aimed at modernizing and maintaining vital infrastructure across the system.
While customer rates remain steady, tap-in fees will modestly rise to $5,765 per equivalent dwelling unit starting July 1, as mandated by the Pennsylvania Municipal Authorities Act.
Key allocations include $2.5 million for sewage treatment services from the Western Westmoreland Municipal Authority and $175,000 for ALCOSAN.
A major $46 million project is nearing completion on Turner Valley Road, replacing the current treatment plant with a new facility and converting the old site into green space.
Future plans target upgrades to the Larimer and Woodside pump stations, funded in part by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Read More... |
The Strawpump Volunteer Fire Department has regained its status as the primary emergency responder for eastern North Huntingdon, marking a major milestone after losing that designation 18 months ago.
Township commissioners voted unanimously to restore Strawpump’s role, recognizing its commitment to improved safety and service benchmarks.
Fire Chief Ryan Senica expressed both relief and pride, emphasizing the department’s readiness to protect the community with renewed confidence.
Strawpump’s reinstatement follows significant improvements to its fire protection rating, which previously dropped to the lowest possible score and caused higher insurance costs for residents.
Now, Verisk Analytics forecasts a much-improved rating of 5, signaling strong progress.
Neighboring fire officials, including Michael Doshen, commended Strawpump’s achievements.
Commissioners will soon vote to restore full funding, while a new feasibility study aims to ensure future fire services remain accountable, consistent, and responsive to the township's needs. Read More... |

There’s a special kind of energy that comes with springtime in Westmoreland County, and it’s not just the flowers blooming—it’s the new storefronts and friendly faces popping up in our downtowns. Whether you’re looking for a fresh date night spot, a unique outfit, or a new pair of shoes for the kids, our local entrepreneurs have been busy making sure we have everything we need right here at home. Here are a few of the newest spots that have recently opened their doors across the county. Pizzaiolo Primo – MurrysvilleIf you’ve driven down William Penn Highway recently, you’ve likely noticed the transformation of the old Atria’s building. Pizzaiolo Primo officially opened its doors on March 18, 2026, bringing a massive, 240-seat authentic Italian experience to Murrysville. Led by Mt. Pleasant native Ron Sofranko, this location is the largest yet for the regional favorite, featuring a stunning wood-fired oven imported directly from Italy. Ron’s vision for the space was about more than just pizza; it was about elevating the suburban dining scene. "We make everything fresh daily—we actually have no freezers in the whole building," Ron shared. Growing up nearby in Mt. Pleasant, he spent plenty of time in Murrysville and knew the community would appreciate a spot that moves beyond typical "bar food" to something truly hand-crafted. With handmade pasta and cheese prepared every morning, it’s a little slice of Naples right on Route 22.
Downtown Greensburg just got a little more stylish thanks to Amy Fiaschetti and her daughters, Rachel Mormack and Madison Swan. This family-run dream team officially held their grand opening for Moss & Rain Boutique today, April 18, 2026. Located in the historic space that once housed Garcia Jewelers, the shop is a beautiful tribute to family and community, with a logo that subtly honors Amy’s late husband and her three grandchildren. The boutique focuses on a "one-on-one" shopping experience, specializing in comfortable but stylish pieces like the highly-coveted Judy Blue Jeans. "I love the idea of a smaller store where you really get to know your customers and their style," Amy said. The family fell in love with the "up and coming" energy of downtown Greensburg and is excited to be part of the growing network of supportive women-owned businesses in the city.
Shoe Sensation – LatrobeFor those in the Latrobe area, the Latrobe 30 Plaza just gained a major convenience with the arrival of Shoe Sensation. They celebrated their ribbon cutting on April 16, 2026, filling a long-standing need for a dedicated family footwear store in the immediate area. While it’s a larger brand, the focus of the Latrobe team is on being a "community-focused" retailer that makes shoe shopping easy for busy local families. Residents are already enjoying the wide selection of brand names for men, women, and children without having to make the trek into larger metro areas. It’s a great example of how our local plazas are revitalizing and bringing more variety back to the Latrobe shopping corridor.
