This Newsletter is Sponsored by: Angela's Angels

Angela’s Angels in Latrobe has been transforming prom experiences for Westmoreland County teens for over 20 years.

Founded by Angela Rose O’Brien, the boutique at 600 Ligonier Street offers free, high-quality formalwear to students facing financial hardship—ensuring no one misses a milestone due to cost.

The impact is deeply personal, as shown by former recipient Merrissa. Years after choosing her dress, she donated it back, hoping to give another girl the same Cinderella magic.

Families across the county support Angela’s mission by donating dresses, accessories, and their time.

Special care is taken to stock plus-size gowns, promoting inclusivity and empowerment.

Every appointment is by request, with no judgment—just a celebration of every girl’s unique confidence and worth.

North Huntingdon Township Municipal Authority has adopted an $11.4 million budget for the 2027 fiscal year, ensuring there will be no increase in sewage rates for its 12,750 residential and commercial customers.

The new budget, effective May 1, was announced by General Manager Mike Branthoover.

The board also approved an $8.8 million five-year capital improvement plan aimed at modernizing and maintaining vital infrastructure across the system.

While customer rates remain steady, tap-in fees will modestly rise to $5,765 per equivalent dwelling unit starting July 1, as mandated by the Pennsylvania Municipal Authorities Act.

Key allocations include $2.5 million for sewage treatment services from the Western Westmoreland Municipal Authority and $175,000 for ALCOSAN.

A major $46 million project is nearing completion on Turner Valley Road, replacing the current treatment plant with a new facility and converting the old site into green space.

Future plans target upgrades to the Larimer and Woodside pump stations, funded in part by the Commonwealth Financing Authority.

The Strawpump Volunteer Fire Department has regained its status as the primary emergency responder for eastern North Huntingdon, marking a major milestone after losing that designation 18 months ago.

Township commissioners voted unanimously to restore Strawpump’s role, recognizing its commitment to improved safety and service benchmarks.

Fire Chief Ryan Senica expressed both relief and pride, emphasizing the department’s readiness to protect the community with renewed confidence.

Strawpump’s reinstatement follows significant improvements to its fire protection rating, which previously dropped to the lowest possible score and caused higher insurance costs for residents.

Now, Verisk Analytics forecasts a much-improved rating of 5, signaling strong progress.

Neighboring fire officials, including Michael Doshen, commended Strawpump’s achievements.

Commissioners will soon vote to restore full funding, while a new feasibility study aims to ensure future fire services remain accountable, consistent, and responsive to the township's needs.

There’s a special kind of energy that comes with springtime in Westmoreland County, and it’s not just the flowers blooming—it’s the new storefronts and friendly faces popping up in our downtowns. Whether you’re looking for a fresh date night spot, a unique outfit, or a new pair of shoes for the kids, our local entrepreneurs have been busy making sure we have everything we need right here at home.

Here are a few of the newest spots that have recently opened their doors across the county.

Pizzaiolo Primo – Murrysville

If you’ve driven down William Penn Highway recently, you’ve likely noticed the transformation of the old Atria’s building. Pizzaiolo Primo officially opened its doors on March 18, 2026, bringing a massive, 240-seat authentic Italian experience to Murrysville. Led by Mt. Pleasant native Ron Sofranko, this location is the largest yet for the regional favorite, featuring a stunning wood-fired oven imported directly from Italy.

Ron’s vision for the space was about more than just pizza; it was about elevating the suburban dining scene. "We make everything fresh daily—we actually have no freezers in the whole building," Ron shared. Growing up nearby in Mt. Pleasant, he spent plenty of time in Murrysville and knew the community would appreciate a spot that moves beyond typical "bar food" to something truly hand-crafted. With handmade pasta and cheese prepared every morning, it’s a little slice of Naples right on Route 22.

  • Support them: Visit them at 4869 William Penn Highway. They are open for lunch and dinner, with a great Happy Hour from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Thursday. You can check out the full menu at murrysville.pizzaioloprimo.com.

Moss & Rain Boutique – Greensburg

Downtown Greensburg just got a little more stylish thanks to Amy Fiaschetti and her daughters, Rachel Mormack and Madison Swan. This family-run dream team officially held their grand opening for Moss & Rain Boutique today, April 18, 2026. Located in the historic space that once housed Garcia Jewelers, the shop is a beautiful tribute to family and community, with a logo that subtly honors Amy’s late husband and her three grandchildren.

The boutique focuses on a "one-on-one" shopping experience, specializing in comfortable but stylish pieces like the highly-coveted Judy Blue Jeans. "I love the idea of a smaller store where you really get to know your customers and their style," Amy said. The family fell in love with the "up and coming" energy of downtown Greensburg and is excited to be part of the growing network of supportive women-owned businesses in the city.

  • Support them: Stop by 104 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Their regular hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours until 8:00 PM on Thursdays. They’ll also be staying open late until 9:00 PM during the Greensburg Night Markets!

Shoe Sensation – Latrobe

For those in the Latrobe area, the Latrobe 30 Plaza just gained a major convenience with the arrival of Shoe Sensation. They celebrated their ribbon cutting on April 16, 2026, filling a long-standing need for a dedicated family footwear store in the immediate area. While it’s a larger brand, the focus of the Latrobe team is on being a "community-focused" retailer that makes shoe shopping easy for busy local families.

Residents are already enjoying the wide selection of brand names for men, women, and children without having to make the trek into larger metro areas. It’s a great example of how our local plazas are revitalizing and bringing more variety back to the Latrobe shopping corridor.

  • Support them: You can find them in Suite 121 & 122 of the Latrobe 30 Plaza. They are open daily, providing a friendly, local staff ready to help you find the perfect fit.

Here is your weekly roundup of the good news and great people making a difference in Westmoreland County.

Local Shoutouts

Celebrating Our Scholar-Athletes!

We are sending a huge round of applause to the 2026 Westmoreland County Scholar-Athlete nominees! Highlighting the bunch this week is Elijah Brown of Belle Vernon, a Penn State wrestling commit with a stellar 4.2 GPA, and Gabby Dusi, a Duquesne tennis commit ranked sixth in her class. These students prove that you can dominate on the field and in the classroom simultaneously.

Local Heroes

Standing Together Against Homelessness

A heartfelt thank you to the members of the Westmoreland County Homeless Engagement Subcommittee. This group of dedicated citizens met this past Tuesday at Sage’s Army in Greensburg to coordinate outreach efforts and reduce the stigma surrounding homelessness in our neighborhoods. Their tireless work ensures that our most vulnerable residents aren't forgotten.

Local Causes

Raising Awareness for Developmental Abilities

Our community showed up in a big way for the ID/A (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities/Autism) Community Awareness Event! This initiative focuses on fostering "Olympic-style teamwork" and inclusivity across the county. It's a beautiful reminder that our community is strongest when everyone—regardless of ability—is invited to play, dance, and participate.

  • Key Details: While the main event at Westmoreland Mall wrapped up recently, community awareness initiatives continue throughout the month of April.

Fundraisers

Taking a Stand: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

It's time to lace up (or perhaps "heel up") for a great cause! Today, community members are gathering for the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. This fundraiser is a lighthearted way to tackle a very serious issue, with proceeds staying right here in Westmoreland County to fund advocacy and support services.

Volunteer Opportunities

Lend a Hand to Local Nonprofits

The United Way of Southwestern PA has a call out for volunteers right now in Greensburg! They are looking for friendly faces to help prepare resource folders containing brochures and hotline cards for residents in crisis. It’s a simple task that makes a massive impact for those seeking help in our community.

  • Key Details: Volunteer shifts are available on Fridays and Saturdays in Greensburg. Contact Mark Harrison at the United Way to sign up.

Atlas's Story:

Meet Atlas...a loyal heart ready for his forever home

Atlas is a handsome male German Shepherd who's ready to leave his stray days behind and start a new chapter with a family of his own. This friendly boy greets new people with a warm nature and quickly shows just how loving and devoted he can be.

True to his breed, Atlas is smart, attentive, and enjoys having a person by his side. He walks nicely on leash and would make a great companion for daily walks, outdoor adventures, or simply hanging out at home with his people.

Atlas is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped..... all set to make a smooth transition into his forever home.

German Shepherd experience is always a plus for potential adopters to help Atlas continue to thrive and be the best version of himself.

He's ready to give his whole heart to someone... could that be you?

Heal Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
If you are interested in any of our adoptable animals, please call or email the shelter at 724-925-2555 or info@healanimalrescue.org to schedule a time for a meet and greet with the animal of which you are interested.  You will also need to fill out an adoption application. Our shelter staff and adoption counselors will review your information to see if you are a good match for the pet you have selected. Please allow yourself about an hour to have the proper time to spend with an adoption counselor to discuss the responsibility of owning your specific pet and making a lifetime commitment.  Please remember our number one goal and priority is finding FOREVER homes for the dogs and cats in our care and matching the right pet with the right home environment.  Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption.  Some pets receive multiple applications and we do our best to sort through to find the absolute best match possible.

Please give Atlas the forever home he deserves!
