Pennsylvania could soon crack down on toll evaders with tougher penalties across its extensive turnpike system.

Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward and Sen. Judy Ward announced plans for legislation targeting repeat offenders.

With unpaid tolls now topping $200 million statewide, lawmakers stress that lost revenue threatens crucial transportation infrastructure.

The turnpike's 565 miles span I-76, I-476, the Mon-Fayette Expressway, and other major routes vital to the region.

Under the proposal, drivers who keep using turnpike roads while suspended for unpaid tolls could face charges such as criminal trespassing.

Deliberate evaders with over $10,000 in unpaid tolls may be charged with a third-degree felony.

Officials warn that every missed payment means higher tolls for law-abiding drivers, with E-ZPass and Toll By Plate fares rising again this year.

The bill is set for introduction soon in the General Assembly.

Pittsburgh will host the highly anticipated NFL Draft from April 23 to 25, drawing a surge of visitors and prompting the Westmoreland County Transit Authority (WCTA) to expand its services.

To meet demand, WCTA plans extra afternoon buses into the city on Thursday and Friday, plus three to four late-night return trips.

Staffing poses a challenge, but the agency is actively mobilizing drivers and supervisors to maintain reliable service without affecting daily routes.

With over 500,000 visitors expected in Western Pennsylvania, many are lodging outside Allegheny County.

This is set to boost local dining and shopping in Westmoreland County.

The extended bus service benefits both visitors and residents planning to join the Draft festivities, all at the regular fare.

Riders are urged to use the NFL OnePass app for real-time transit updates during the event.

Maura Jodkin, a junior at Saint Vincent College and 2023 Plum Senior High graduate, transformed a summer internship into meaningful scientific discovery focused on our region’s streams.

Guided by Dr. Peter Smyntek, she led research into how phosphate pollutants affect local waterways, presenting her findings at the Student Symposium on the Environment at Westminster College in December 2025.

Fieldwork took Jodkin and peers to Fourmile Run and Jacks Run, where they investigated the impact of abandoned mine drainage and treated wastewater.

Analysis showed that increased pH can release phosphates, raising risks of algal blooms and complicating stream restoration.

Jodkin actively supports fellow students as a tutor, teaching assistant, and leader in campus organizations.

Her passion for connecting environmental health and childhood well-being drives her future ambitions, blending hands-on science with community engagement.

Westmoreland County has had a few encouraging new business stories lately, and they’re the kind that make a community feel a little more alive. From a long-awaited local restaurant dream in Latrobe to a hometown sandwich shop getting a fresh start in Greensburg, these openings are bringing new energy to familiar places.

Latrobe: Terrapin Bistro

Terrapin Bistro opened Feb. 7 in Latrobe at the B&D Creekside Activity Center on Avenue B, giving the city a new bar-and-restaurant option with a Grateful Dead-inspired personality. Owner Richie Matsko said he’d wanted to own a restaurant since he was a kid, and the idea for Terrapin had been taking shape for years before he finally brought it to life.triblive

What makes this spot feel especially local is the mix of personal touches and community flavor. Matsko has said he wants guests to feel welcome, and the menu reflects that spirit with playful dishes like the “Fast Eddie” smash burger and “Dark Star” salmon salad, plus artwork from local artists on the walls. If you’re looking for a place to try something new while supporting a neighbor’s longtime dream, this looks like a good one to put on the list.triblive

Greensburg: Henry’s Hoagies

Downtown Greensburg got a familiar favorite back in a new form when Henry’s Hoagies reopened under new ownership earlier this month. Michelle Maxson, a lifelong Greensburg resident, took over the sandwich shop after its brief closure, bringing decades of food-service experience and a clear love for the business.triblive

Maxson plans to keep the shop’s neighborhood feel while adding a few of her own touches, including soups, side salads, Boar’s Head meats, and expanded bread choices. She also hopes to bring back coleslaw based on a recipe she learned as a teenager, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes a local business feel rooted in the community rather than dropped into it.triblive

New Kensington: Evanly Bakes

Over in New Kensington, Evanly Bakes recently moved into a bigger spot at 945 Fifth Ave., a sign that the bakery’s following has grown enough to need more room. The shop offers gluten-free brownies, blondies, and cake jars, which gives the city another sweet stop with a distinctive niche.triblive

This is the kind of small business news that quietly says a lot: people are finding the product, the business is growing, and a neighborhood is gaining another reason to stop downtown. If you live nearby and have a sweet tooth, this is a good local business to keep in mind.triblive

Route 30 corridor: Tractor Supply in Lower Burrell

A new Tractor Supply is expected to open this spring in the Kinloch section of Lower Burrell, with a soft opening planned for late March and a grand opening in mid-April. The store is going up next to Family Dollar on Greensburg Road and is expected to bring about 15 jobs to the area.triblive

This one fills a very practical need for shoppers on the Route 30/Greensburg Road side of the county, especially folks looking for farm, garden, pet, and home-supply items without making a longer trip. The planned pet wash, garden center, and feed center make it feel more useful than just another chain store, and that should make it a welcome addition for nearby residents.triblive

🌿 LOCAL CAUSES

Turning Orange Creeks Blue Again: Big Environmental Win for Our Waterways

This is the kind of long-term community win that deserves attention. Westmoreland County announced a partnership with the Turtle Creek Watershed Association to begin cleanup of the Irwin mine discharge — the first step in addressing the largest untreated abandoned mine discharge in Western Pennsylvania. For years, Brush Creek has run orange from polluted mine water, and this county-backed initiative is finally moving the needle. About 9 million gallons of polluted water a day currently flows into the creek — cleaning this up is a generational gift to our community.

Key Details:

  • The project involves acquiring a key 50-acre parcel in North Huntingdon Township as the location for water treatment systems that will clean the mine water before it enters Brush Creek.
