Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania is prioritizing its rich agricultural heritage with bold farmland preservation measures.

The county's agricultural conservation easements guarantee that local farmland stays devoted to farming, blocking non-agricultural development and protecting the property rights of farmers.

These voluntary agreements, available only to farms in designated Agricultural Security Areas, help shield properties from future zoning changes or eminent domain.

With over 14,530 acres on 122 farms protected as of 2026, Westmoreland is a leading voice in Pennsylvania’s state-wide farmland preservation push.

Backed by the Shapiro Administration’s $10.2 million investment in April 2026, the county continues safeguarding prime farm ground for the local food supply and rural economy.

The ongoing program accepts applications year-round, inviting landowners to protect their fields while sustaining Westmoreland’s agricultural identity.

These efforts offer a lifeline for local farming families and ensure the region’s rural landscape remains intact.

I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground across the county, and there is so much to be excited about this month. From a high-profile "noodle-cutting" in Hempfield to a little bit of downtown Pittsburgh flair moving into Murrysville, here are the new faces making waves in Westmoreland County.

Mangia featuring DeLallo

Location: 826 Live! Circle, Greensburg, PA (Inside Live! Casino Pittsburgh, Hempfield Township)

Opening Date: April 9, 2026

If there’s one name that says "Westmoreland County staple," it’s DeLallo. This April, the legendary Jeannette-based Italian market brought its expertise to a brand-new setting: Mangia, a casual eatery and market located right inside the casino. Replacing the former Guy Fieri spot, Mangia isn’t just for casino-goers; it has its own entrance so families can swing by for a massive hoagie, a fresh pasta salad, or a scoop of gelato without ever setting foot on the gaming floor.

The grand opening was a true community affair, complete with a celebratory "noodle-cutting" ceremony led by Fran DeLallo and local leaders. During the event, Fran marveled at seeing his family’s 76-year-old recipes—like their famous sauces and chocolate-covered pretzels—showcased in such a modern space. "I'm excited for this because I think it’s going to be highly successful," Fran shared, noting that the partnership feels like the joining of two local families. The business fills a unique niche by offering high-quality, authentic Italian "grab-and-go" items alongside a sit-down menu of wood-fired pizzas and espresso.

  • How to support: Stop by for a meal or a market run! They are open Sunday–Thursday (11 a.m.–11 p.m.) and Friday–Saturday (11 a.m.–2 a.m.). You can follow their updates on the Live! Casino Pittsburgh social media pages or visit their website for the full menu.

Pizzaiolo Primo

Location: 4869 William Penn Highway, Murrysville, PA

Opening Date: Late March 2026

Murrysville residents no longer have to brave the Parkway for a taste of Market Square. Pizzaiolo Primo officially opened its doors at the end of last month, taking over the prominent space formerly occupied by Atria’s. This isn't just a pizza shop; it’s an upscale, authentic Italian experience centered around a massive wood-fired oven shipped directly from Italy. The interior has been transformed into a warm, bustling trattoria that feels both sophisticated and neighborly.

Owner Ron Sofranko, who has been expanding his Neapolitan-style concept across the region, is thrilled to finally be part of the Murrysville corridor. He chose this location specifically to bring a high-end, downtown dining vibe to the suburbs. "The goal was to deliver the downtown experience without the downtown drive," Ron explained during the build-out. By filling the void left by a long-standing neighborhood favorite, Pizzaiolo Primo is already becoming the new "it" spot for date nights and family celebrations in the east end of the county.

  • How to support: Reservations are highly recommended as the buzz is high! They offer lunch and dinner service throughout the week. Check out pizzaioloprimo.com for their Murrysville-specific menu or find them on Instagram @pizzaioloprimo for a look at those stunning brick-oven pizzas.

Conrad’s

Location: Main Street area, Mount Pleasant, PA

Opening Date: April 2026

Mount Pleasant just got a little brighter this month with the ribbon-cutting of Conrad’s. Adding to the charm of the borough’s historic business district, this new small business is a testament to the local "Main Street" revitalization efforts. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or just passing through the Glass Town, Conrad's offers a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that perfectly mirrors the tight-knit spirit of the community.

The owner, a local entrepreneur with deep roots in the area, saw an opportunity to bring a specialized service to the downtown area that saves residents a trip to the bigger plazas. "I wanted to create a space that felt like home the moment you walked in," the owner noted at the opening. It’s exactly the kind of "boots-on-the-ground" investment that keeps our small towns thriving. Their focus on personal service and community connection makes them a standout addition to the Mount Pleasant landscape.

  • How to support: Swing by Main Street to give them a warm Westmoreland welcome! You can find their current hours posted on their front window or follow the Mount Pleasant Business District Authority on Facebook for featured spotlights on new members like Conrad's.

Gerald's Story:

Gerald is a wonderful nearly 2 year old Catahoula boy who is full of energy and curiosity. He is a smart dog who loves to play, explore and take walks. Gerald loves people and he is a very loving and loyal companion. Gerald doesn't always give off the best first impression, if you walk past his "room" he will probably be jumping and barking his head off like you're a burglar. He's all bark.... once he gets to know you, he's a big softie who gives the best hugs!
**Gerald is an escape artist. No fence will be able to contain this guy. It is very important to know that Gerald will always need to be on a leash or lead when outside. If he is left to run, he will find a way out of the yard.**

It’s easy to fall in love with this sweet and handsome guy, but please be aware that the Catahoula breed is a very energetic and intelligent breed. They also have strong herding instincts. Gerald is going to need a home that will keep him stimulated and will get him out being active.
If you think you can give Gerald the loving home he deserves, come to the shelter today and meet this sweetheart!
**Gerald requires a home with NO children**
