Cooling off in places like Keystone State Park’s lake is a popular summer activity, but rising temperatures can mean higher E. coli risks in local waters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that E. coli levels often climb after heavy rainfall, as runoff washes bacteria from people and animals into streams and lakes. Park manager Kris Baker explains that while E. coli is always present, safety depends on how concentrated bacteria become. Keystone State Park tests its water weekly. If dangerous levels are found, swimming areas close until the Pennsylvania Department of Health declares them safe. Other regional agencies, such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, use similar protocols to protect swimmers. So far this summer, Keystone’s water quality has remained strong, with issues only likely after major storms or dry spells. Officials urge visitors to check conditions before visiting and seek help if illness occurs after swimming. Read More... |

🏪 New Around Town: What's Opening in Westmoreland County!Hey neighbors! Spring and summer are bringing some exciting new additions to our corner of Western PA. Here's a roundup of businesses worth putting on your radar — or your dinner reservation list. 🍕 Pizzaiolo Primo — MurrysvilleIf you've ever made the drive downtown to Market Square just for a good Neapolitan pizza, good news: you don't have to anymore. Pizzaiolo Primo opened its third location in Murrysville this spring, taking over the former Atria's space at 4869 William Penn Highway. This one is a big deal — the Murrysville outpost is the largest Pizzaiolo Primo restaurant yet and comes with a full liquor license. The menu features Neapolitan-style pizzas, pastas, and Italian entrées including chicken parm and branzino, anchored by a wood-fired oven that was shipped directly from Italy. Owner Ron Sofranko acquired the original Market Square location in 2021, then opened a South Fayette spot in 2023 — and Murrysville is his latest bet on bringing the downtown Italian experience to the suburbs. The Murrysville page lists hours, a phone number for reservations, and catering options at murrysville.pizzaioloprimo.com. 🥩 Sand Springs Steak & Brew — Downtown LatrobeThis one has a feel-good story wrapped around every dinner plate. Mother-daughter duo Jo and Jacy Eisel are opening Sand Springs Steak & Brew inside the historic 810 Ligonier St. building in downtown Latrobe — a building that was home to a G.C. Murphy Co. department store from the 1930s until 1987, and a Dollar General until 2019 before sitting vacant. The Latrobe Community Revitalization Program, which owns the property, helped make it happen. The Eisels have deep roots in this kind of community dining. Their family opened Sand Springs Saloon & Steakhouse in Maryland in the early 1990s and grew it into a full-service restaurant with over 60 employees. Jacy Eisel, who connected with the LCRP while studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said the family felt an immediate pull toward Latrobe after attending the Great American Banana Split Celebration in 2024. As Jacy put it, "We felt an immediate pull to Latrobe — we knew this was where the next Sand Springs belonged. Seeing the turnout at the Banana Split Festival and how deeply people care made it clear that Latrobe is a very special place and values many of the same things Frostburg does: community, hard work, pride and showing up for one another." The menu will feature steak, seafood, chicken, burgers, pierogis, and salads. Keep an eye on the LCRP's website at latrobe revitalization.org/810ligonier for updates on the opening date. 🍺 Derry Curiosity Shop & Emporium — Derry BoroughLast but absolutely not least, something wonderfully one-of-a-kind just opened its doors in Derry. The Derry Curiosity Shop & Emporium opened at 136 S. Chestnut St. in late May, with its grand opening on May 30, 2026, and is open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Owner William Snyder is a retired Greater Latrobe teacher and local historian with deep family roots in Derry — on his mother's side, John Young, a Revolutionary War veteran, was one of the first settlers in Derry Township. The shop is equally a retail store and a Derry history museum, offering vintage candy, postcards, car parts, draft root beer, and a multitude of historical items. A model train system circles above the bar and pays tribute to Derry's history as a railroad town. Snyder said his goal is to spark a chain reaction: "I want to see other people be encouraged by what I've done, and come into the community and start their own thing. My goal in doing this is to encourage other people that are like-minded, that want to help to grow the community." He priced everything to be accessible, saying he's "not here to make millions of dollars" — just to do something fun and talk to people about history. Stop in, pull up a stool, pour a root beer, and stay a while. We always recommend calling ahead before you visit any new business! |

Westmoreland County has partnered with the Turtle Creek Watershed Association (TCWA) to kick start the long sought-after cleanup of the Irwin Mine Discharge, located at the border of Irwin Borough and North Huntingdon Township. The partnership is the initial step to address the largest untreated abandoned mine discharge in Western Pennsylvania. Once acquired by TCWA, a 50-acre parcel will serve as the location of water treatment systems that will effectively eliminate untreated mine water currently contaminating Brush Creek and turning it orange. This is a major step forward for the county's environmental health — stay tuned for more developments! 📍 Irwin Borough / North Huntingdon Township border 🔗 Source: Westmoreland County PA County Wants to Hear from Young Adults with Disabilities — Your Voice Matters!
