Gas prices across Southwestern Pennsylvania are nearing $4 per gallon, putting extra strain on residents already facing higher living costs.
AAA East Central links the surge to the ongoing Iran conflict, which has disrupted global oil routes — especially in the crucial Strait of Hormuz — pushing crude oil prices to around $100 a barrel.
Crude oil now accounts for a bigger share of what drivers pay at the pump, with costs climbing swiftly as oil prices rise.
Seasonal factors like increased spring travel and the shift to pricier summer-blend gasoline are also fueling the hike.
In Pittsburgh, regular gas averages $3.80 per gallon, almost 60 cents higher than last month.
Beaver County reports the region’s steepest prices, while Indiana and Armstrong counties remain slightly lower.
Pennsylvania’s statewide average of $3.76 is closely tracking the national rate.
Experts caution that the future of gas prices depends on global tensions and local demand. Read More... |
Greater Latrobe Area School District will start its 2026-2027 academic year on August 24, coinciding with the Westmoreland Fair slated for August 21-29.
Superintendent Dr. Kim Rieffannacht assured families that students involved in fair and agricultural events could request excused absences through their principals.
However, several parents voiced frustration, feeling their concerns were overlooked during the board meeting.
Many emphasized the fair’s significance, especially for students in 4-H who dedicate months to projects culminating in this annual event.
Parents worry that the overlapping dates force students to juggle school with fair participation or miss out on key experiences.
Some noted this scheduling conflict affects students across other county districts as well.
The traditional August start for the fair remains unchanged, leaving families hopeful for future adjustments to align school calendars with community traditions. Read More... |

Our local entrepreneurs are busy this spring, and there is a real sense of "revitalization" in the air—from old buildings getting fresh life to new construction bringing much-needed convenience to our rural corners. Pizzaiolo Primo – MurrysvilleIf you’ve driven past the old Atria’s location on William Penn Highway recently, you’ve likely caught a whiff of something incredible. Pizzaiolo Primo officially opened its doors this week on March 18, 2026. This isn't just another pizza shop; it’s the largest location yet for the brand, and it features a massive, authentic wood-fired oven that was shipped all the way from Italy. The man behind the menu is Mt. Pleasant native Ron Sofranko, who grew up visiting Murrysville for family dinners. Bringing his scratch-kitchen concept here felt like a true homecoming. "Murrysville has the growth," Sofranko said. "It’s at the east side of town, so it draws from a wide radius—all the way from the Greensburg areas where I’m from, all the way to the city." What makes this spot special is the dedication to tradition. You won't find a single freezer in the building because everything—from the mozzarella to the pasta—is made by hand every single day. It’s an elevated dining experience that aims to bring a slice of downtown Market Square right to our backyard.
Tractor Supply Co. – Lower BurrellFor those in the northern part of the county, the wait is almost over. A new Tractor Supply Co. is holding its soft opening in late March, followed by a Grand Opening in mid-April 2026. Located in the Kinloch section on Greensburg Road, this store is more than just a retail outlet; it’s a vital resource for our local hobby farmers, pet owners, and DIYers who previously had to travel out of town for supplies. Mayor Chris Fabry is thrilled to see the empty lot next to Family Dollar finally put to good use. "Anytime you see a project like this taking shape, it reinforces that Lower Burrell is a city worth investing in," Fabry noted. The store will offer everything from livestock feed to power tools, providing a one-stop-shop for the rugged, hands-on spirit of our community. This opening is sparking what local officials are calling a "domino effect" of commerce in Lower Burrell. With new jobs and easier access to hardware and garden essentials, it’s a big win for the Kinloch neighborhood's growth.
Henry’s Hoagies – GreensburgDowntown Greensburg recently welcomed a familiar name with a fresh spark. Henry’s Hoagies has officially reopened under the passionate leadership of Michelle Maxson and her boyfriend Zack Dreskler. After the shop had a brief period of uncertainty, Michelle—who has lived in Greensburg for years—stepped in to ensure this local staple didn't disappear from the community's fabric. "Owning a building in downtown Greensburg—it’s just a dream to be a part of the community in that way," Michelle shared. She isn't just keeping things the same, though. She’s already looking toward the summer to introduce breakfast options and special "spaghetti nights" to encourage neighbors to sit down, stay a while, and reconnect in their dining room. The shop is a perfect example of how our neighbors are stepping up to preserve the local spots we love while adding their own unique flavor. It’s the kind of place where the owners are behind the counter, ready to catch up on the latest town news while they build your sandwich.
