Sewickley Academy captured the WPIAL Class 2A basketball championship with a commanding 52-38 victory over defending titleholder Jeannette at the Petersen Events Center, celebrating their first crown since 2018 and sixth overall.
The Panthers’ towering duo, Mamadou Kane and Adam Ikamba, both 6-foot-8, set the tone by each scoring 14 points and combining for 15 rebounds. Their height and presence inside frustrated Jeannette, who struggled to score against sewickley's tough, disciplined defense.
Jeannette, recognized for athleticism and grit, managed just one three-pointer, a testament to the Panthers’ relentless perimeter pressure. Despite the loss, the Jayhawks continued to impress with their competitive spirit.
Tensions briefly flared after the contest, reflecting the emotional stakes, but both teams ultimately showed respect and sportsmanship.
With the PIAA playoffs ahead, both programs remain local favorites, ready to build on this season’s impressive journeys. Read More... |

Terrapin Bistro, LatrobeLatrobe has a new hangout for music lovers and comfort‑food fans with the opening of Terrapin Bistro, a Grateful Dead–inspired bar and restaurant that officially opened its doors on February 7 along Avenue B at the B&D Creekside Activity Center in Latrobe. Owner Richie Matsko, 38, grew up cooking with his grandparents and has spent years in local kitchens, including a stint at Leo’s Pub and Grille in Mt. Pleasant and most recently Tin Lizzy Restaurant and Taproom in Youngstown Borough. After he posted on social media looking for a kitchen job, B&D Creekside owner Darlene Schmucker invited him to look at her vacant restaurant space—he stopped by the next day, and she handed him the keys. Terrapin Bistro’s menu reads like a little love letter to The Grateful Dead, with items such as the “Fast Eddie” smash burger, “Let it Grow” zucchini planks and the “Dark Star” salmon salad, plus a mix of casual bar bites like chicken sandwiches, wings, and homestyle dinners such as chicken parmesan, meatloaf, and stuffed peppers. Local art lines the walls, including pieces by Greensburg‑area artist Mark Serlo, who has created artwork for The Grateful Dead itself, giving the dining room a distinctly Westmoreland spin on the band’s legacy. Matsko says that what really drives him is hospitality: he likes to “touch tables,” talk to guests, and make sure people feel truly welcome when they come in to eat. While the restaurant side is already open, the bar component is slated to open by next month, which should make Terrapin a new go‑to spot for Latrobe locals looking for dinner, drinks, and a laid‑back atmosphere. Residents can support Terrapin Bistro by stopping in for a meal, checking out the rotating artwork from local creatives, and spreading the word to friends who might be looking for a new place to gather in Latrobe. (Hours, full address, and social media for Terrapin Bistro were not listed in the available coverage as of late February, so readers may want to search “Terrapin Bistro Latrobe PA” or check B&D Creekside Activity Center’s channels for the latest details.) |

Interesting Facts |
The Greensburg Athletic Association was an early organized football team, based in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, that played from 1890 until 1900. At times referred to as the Greensburg Athletic Club, the team began as an amateur football club in 1890 and was composed primarily of locals before several professional players were added for the 1895 season. In 1894 it was discovered that the team had secretly paid formerly Indiana Normal (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania) player, Lawson Fiscus, to play football and retained his services on salary. The team was the chief rival of another early professional football team, the Latrobe Athletic Association.
