Recent data indicates that approximately 5,800 subsidized housing units are available in the county, with about 11% currently unoccupied and ready for rent. To tackle these challenges, several local initiatives have been launched. The Westmoreland County Housing Authority (WCHA) has developed properties like Odin View Apartments, a non-smoking building offering 47 units exclusively for residents aged 62 and older. These units are subsidized, with rent based on 30% of the tenant's monthly income, ensuring affordability for seniors.

Additionally, the Troutman Building Apartments in Greensburg provides 27 one-bedroom units for elderly residents, featuring amenities such as included utilities and coin-operated laundry facilities. Homes Build Hope, for instance, operates nearly 140 housing units throughout Westmoreland County, including areas like East Vandergrift, Irwin, Jeannette, Greensburg, Latrobe, and Derry. These include the Homeless Engagement and Pathways to Affordable Housing subcommittees, which work on outreach efforts and developing strategies to prevent homelessness and increase affordable housing options.
